Origin
Tradition credits the lord of Kishiwada with starting it as a prayer for the rice harvest. For three centuries the neighbourhoods have competed with their own floats, so the unit of this festival is the machi — outsiders joining is simply not part of the design.
What to look for
Yarimawashi: a float of around four tonnes, running, is turned at a street corner without slowing down. Not slowing is the whole point, and the knowledge that a failure means a serious accident carries straight into the crowd.
How to watch
Never stand on the inside of a corner. The barriers exist for safety, not as a suggestion to be negotiated for a better photograph. Do not approach a float that is moving.
