Origin
Takayama is split between two tutelary shrines, north and south: spring belongs to Hie Shrine, autumn to Sakurayama Hachimangū. The town has two festivals because it has two parishes.
What to look for
Eleven floats appear here — a different set from the twelve of the spring festival. Comparing the two shows the range of Hida craft. The Hotei float performs its karakuri offering, and because it falls as the leaves turn, the floats and the mountains arrive in the same frame.
How to watch
As in spring, the floats are not to be touched. Accommodation is extremely tight — book lodging before anything else.
