Origin
The roots are in Tanabata lantern-floating: impurity transferred to a lantern and sent away on the water. One etymology derives nebuta from nemuri-nagashi, "floating away the drowsiness" of midsummer. The colossal scale is a modern development.
What to look for
The floats themselves are the point — faces built from paper, wire and light, at a scale photographs flatten. The haneto dancers are the one layer open to visitors: rent the costume and you may join the column. The final day moves the floats onto the water, with fireworks.
How to watch
Anyone may dance as a haneto — no advance registration, no sign-up on the day, no need to belong to a group. The one condition is the costume: a flower hat, a predominantly white yukata, a red or pink sash, white tabi and zōri. This is not a formality but the etiquette of taking part. Whistles unrelated to the music, fireworks, firecrackers and large sake bottles are forbidden, and you must never double back against the flow of the procession. Do not touch the floats. The call is "Rassera"; join in and you will be welcomed.
